If you’re feeling bloated and wondering, “What is going on with my body?”—you’re not alone.
Bloating is one of those symptoms that can sneak up on you. Your jeans feel tighter. Your stomach feels full or uncomfortable. You may notice pressure, swelling, or that “puffy” feeling that doesn’t seem to go away. And naturally, your mind starts asking questions.
Could this mean I’m pregnant?
The short answer: it could be. But it could also be something else. Let’s talk about it.
Why bloating happens in early pregnancy
In early pregnancy, your body begins to change almost immediately - even before you miss a period. One of the biggest changes is a rise in hormones, especially progesterone.
Progesterone relaxes the muscles in your body, including the muscles in your digestive system. When digestion slows down, gas can build up, and that can cause bloating and discomfort. Increased blood flow and fluid retention can also contribute to that swollen, full feeling.
For some people, bloating is one of the very first symptoms they notice.
Bloating doesn’t always mean pregnancy
It’s important to know that bloating is common for many reasons. Hormonal changes related to your menstrual cycle, stress, certain foods, digestive issues, or even dehydration can all cause bloating.
That’s why bloating alone isn’t a reliable way to know if you’re pregnant.
But if bloating is paired with other symptoms like a missed period, nausea, breast tenderness, fatigue, or frequent urination, it may be worth taking a pregnancy test.
What you can do right now
If you’re experiencing bloating and think pregnancy might be a possibility, here are a few gentle next steps:
Pay attention to your body and any other symptoms you’re experiencing
Drink water and eat regularly, even if your appetite feels off
Try light movement, like walking, which can help digestion
Take a pregnancy test - or get one at no cost
