How Do I Tell My Parents That I'm Pregnant?

Your pregnancy was unexpected. You’re likely still processing the news and one of the biggest challenges you face might be telling your parents. How do you approach that conversation? How will they react? Will they be disappointed Angry? Demanding? Supportive?

Since there is no way to be 100% sure of what their reaction will be, preparing for the conversation can be challenging. But you can do it!

We want to offer just a few simple steps that will help you prepare yourself with information & resources so that you can share the news confidently.

Confirm Your Pregnancy

It’s important to be positive that you are actually pregnant. At Mosaic of the Southern Tier, we offer access to medical-grade pregnancy testing administered by an on-site nurse. These tests can detect pregnancy as early as three weeks after the first day of your last period.

Gather All the Facts

If your pregnancy test is positive, your next step is to have an ultrasound. At Mosaic of the Southern Tier, we provide you access to a free ultrasound scan on site performed by a medical professional. These scans are vital, no matter what you plan to do about your pregnancy. An ultrasound determines three things:

  1. That pregnancy is in the uterus (and not ectopic)

  2. The gestational age (how far along you are)

  3. The viability of the fetus (if there is a heartbeat)

Once you know how far along you are and that the pregnancy is viable, then you can start considering your options. Often, women think the only choice they have with their unexpected pregnancy is abortion. But you have options!

At Mosaic of the Southern Tier, our team is ready to sit with you and listen. We want to hear your hopes and dreams and fears. You can ask questions and we can discuss the options you are interested in exploring.  We are prepared to equip you with the right information to confidently share the news with your parents.

Give Yourself Some Time

After you have all the information, it’s important to allow yourself time to process everything you have learned. Remember to be kind & compassionate towards yourself, treating yourself with the same grace & patience you would extend to a friend facing a similar situation.

Remember… You Are Not Alone

No matter what choice you make, we’re here for you. No matter how your parents respond, we’re here for you. No matter what tomorrow holds, we’re here for you. There is hope and we believe you can do this. Reach out today to schedule your appointment.
