Hurting After Abortion? You’re Not Alone. Understanding Post-Abortion Syndrome (PAS)

For many women, abortion doesn’t just end a pregnancy—it begins a journey of quiet grief, unresolved emotions, and lingering pain that’s hard to put into words. If you’re feeling this way, we want you to know: you’re not alone, and you’re not crazy for hurting.

There’s a name for what you may be experiencing: Post-Abortion Syndrome (PAS).

What Is Post-Abortion Syndrome?

Post-Abortion Syndrome is a term used to describe a range of emotional, psychological, and even spiritual struggles that some women (and men) face after an abortion. It’s not an official medical diagnosis, but many counselors, pregnancy resource centers, and faith-based healing ministries recognize the very real patterns of post-abortion grief and trauma.

PAS doesn’t always appear right away. Sometimes the symptoms show up days after an abortion. For others, it takes months—or even years—to surface.

Common Symptoms of PAS

Post-abortion distress can look different for everyone, but common symptoms include:

  • 💧 Persistent sadness, depression, or crying spells

  • 😔 Guilt, regret, or self-condemnation

  • 😶 Emotional numbness or avoidance

  • 🌙 Nightmares or flashbacks of the abortion experience

  • 💥 Panic attacks or anxiety

  • 🙅‍♀️ Difficulty in relationships or intimacy

  • 🙏 Spiritual struggles—feeling distant from God or unable to forgive yourself

These emotions may feel confusing or overwhelming, especially if you were told you'd feel relief. But the truth is, your grief is valid, even if no one else understands it.

Who Is at Risk?

Not everyone who has an abortion experiences PAS. However, certain factors may increase the likelihood, including:

  • Feeling pressured or coerced into the abortion

  • Having strong personal, cultural, or religious beliefs about abortion

  • Lack of support before or after the procedure

  • Previous trauma, such as abuse or loss

  • Pre-existing mental health challenges

If this sounds like you—or someone you love—please hear this: you are not weak. You are not broken. You are human.
